Private Vacation Rental Operators Under Fire

An article this week in the Denver Post uncovers a phenomenon that is occuring across ski resort towns in Colorado.  Private vacation rental operators using the popular site: Vacation Rental By Owner or http://www.vrbo.com are doing quite well renting their second homes and ski condos and many of these folks are not paying their respective township’s lodging taxes.  My friend Elizabeth Smith was quoted in the article. She pays her fair share of taxes – 12.5% to the Town of Crested Butte but most VRBO renters do not pay anything, pocketing the income and turning a blind eye to their town’s lodging tax rules.
